Fiddler's Green - Folk Rock from Germany

in music •  7 years ago

Hello Steemians,

let me introduce to you these great English singing guys from Germany! They self-describe their music as Speedfolk. Actually it's a mix between folk-rock / irish-folk in which they bring in parts from other genres like reggae, ska or punk.

Victor and his Demons from the album Wall of Folk from 2011

Fiddler's Green was founded in Erlangen (Germany) in 1990. In the same year they finished second the Erlanger Newcomer-Festival which led to the first album in 1992. Since back then they released 14 album and 6 live-recordings! In their earlier years they focused more on melodies and also had more reggae parts in their songs. A good example for this is the song Rainbow Warrior from 1995. The new works has more rock and punk elements but still accompanied by nice melodies and here and there some off-beats.

Would be a little too much to name all album here, so only the basic data:
First album in 1992: Fiddler's Green
Last Album in 2016: Devil's Dozen

The name Fiddler's Green is from the Irish name for the sailors afterlife "where there is perpetual mirth, a fiddle that never stops playing, and dancers who never tire". In a novel of Frederick Marryat in 1856 are lyrics to a sailors song:

At Fiddler’s Green, where seamen true
When here they’ve done their duty
The bowl of grog shall still renew
And pledge to love and beauty

The 6-headed band creates also wonderful ballads. Just as example Stay by myside from 1995 or this song, Lullaby, from 2003:

Lullaby from the album Nu Folk from 2003

I saw them live on the Summer Breeze festival in 2013 - that was also the first time I came in touch with them. On the campsite we listened to their song "No more pawn" all the time for 4 days. Half of our camp loved it and the other half hated it after 2 days of constant listening. But it was our hit for the festival in this year and it's really a catching song.
So after listening to this song for 3 days, I decided to check out the concert on the mainstage... and I loved it! Unfortunately they haven't played "No more pawn", the only song of which I knew every single word.
5 years later i'm still in love with their music and if they will come around again I will be there... hoping for "No more pawn" :D

For the end here's a powerful song from their latest album:

Johnny from the album Devil's Dozen from 2016

Stay heavy! \m/

They sound really good @twolittlebirds! Thanks for sharing it.
Let me introduce you to a catalan folk/rock band with an irish touch. They are called Ebri Knight (Drunk Knight, or Every Night, he,he). They sing in catalan so don't think you'll understand it. Anyway, they sing about antifascism, freedom and they use to play some catalan traditional song covers. In this concert they have several collaborations

Also a videoclip

Really cool man, thank you for sharing! Always looking for new bands and there are soooo many I don't know yet :)
Although i don't understand a word, I would dance in the front row on this concert you pinned

154 Tage klingt verdammt viel :D aber ja freu mich auch schon wieder wie ein Quokka drauf!

I always look forward to your posts @twolittlebirds! I always find it hard to find new music. These guys are awesome.. I am a big fan of bands like Streetlight Manifesto and also Punk like NOFX, Pennywise - this was a nice new take on that type of music.

What album would you reccomend starting with?

Keep up the good work!

Thank you for the motivating words! would wish something new from Streetlight Manifesto after the last album in 2013, love these guys too...

My favourite album of Fiddler's Green is definitely "Winners & Boozers" from 2013 with songs like "The more the merrier", "Raise your arms" or "Never Hide" ;)

Yea the last album of theres was possibly my favourite although they are all so good! Man I read that Toh Kay came for a show in New Zealand last year and I missed it - it wasnt well advertised!

Just listened to that album I really liked it! Think il try the new album tommorow :)

haha fuck - hope for you they will come near to you soon... and near to me too :D
