7 Day culture challenge - day 4! Dutch Music

in music •  7 years ago

@conradt started a new challenge, the 7-days culture challenge. In this challenge you have to write about things that are typical for the culture of your country. I was nominated by him which I think is great because there is so much to write about culture and I would like to read about different cultures to see possible resembles or the opposite.. great way to get to know eachother and our backgrounds even better..

Dutch music

although I find this a hard one, because is there any typical Dutch music?! , I still wanted to do this post because I do think there are some typical Dutch artists.

My definition of Dutch music is one that you can really recognize as Dutch and then I don't mean the language lol...

Dutch DJ's

The biggest export product of Holland, besides our beloved flowers, are DJ's and Trance/Dance. I don't know what it is, but the world seems to love our DJ's and their music. This year for instance martin garrix was announced as best DJ of the world for this year (again). And when you look at the top 100 of DJ's of DJMAG.com, you see that the top 10 is dominated by Dutch DJ's. (see the charts here)

  • Martin Garrix
  • Armin van buuren
  • Hardwell
  • Tiësto
  • Afrojack

to name a few..

Afrojack with Ten Feet Tall

But how funny is may sounds, it's no typical Dutch music they play.....
They do make a tonload of money with their music. And although I do respect them for what they do, I think it is way overdone with the money they earn... But that is how the market works....I guess..

Dutch "Smartlappen"

The "smartlappen" are songs from the Dutch folks-music. This is, what I think, typical Dutch and you can compare this the most with German "Schlager muzik"... The lyrics are often about life, divorces, heart-ache etc. Lyrics most people can relate to because they have experienced those situations themselves...

This kind of music is often very popular in the working class, by the way no value judgment from my side. I tend to like some of those songs too ;) ...

One of the biggest "Smartlappen" singer in Holland has to be Andre Hazes. Het was the king of "Smartlappen".. He passed away in 2004 cause of heartfailure. His lifestyle was part of that, he smoked a lot and drank a lot of alcholol. But for sure he was the best...

Ik leef mijn eigen leven, by Andre Hazes

This song is typical for his music, often he used coversongs from foreign musicians and made his own lyrics on them... But as you can hear, he does have an amazing voice....
When he passed away the held a memorial service in The Amsterdam Arena (the football stadium of Ajax)... It was packed with people... That showed how much he and his music were loved in Holland..

I've been to a concert of him one time with my wife and friends... I must admit, his concerts are one big party and sing alongs...

Still a lot of Dutch people are big fans of Andre Hazes. His son (Andre jr.) is following his footsteps. He is also singing the same genre as his dad and is very succesfull with it....

Andre Hazes jr. with his hit-song "Leef"

This song is about a guy who only has a few days left... And want's to give the message to people that they have to live like it is your last dat tomorrow... a.k.a. have fun today, because tomorrow it may not be possible anymore...

There are so many artists in Holland who sing this genre, so I won't bother you with all their names... There is just one I wanted to point out. Althoug I am not very fond of this genre. This song was played by my mother often and that's why I know it so well.... For some reason I believe everything what she is singing, she has a great voice and charisma...

Rita Hovink with "Laat me alleen" which means "leave me alone

I end this post whith a Dutch singer Ilse de Lange, although here music is Country and far from Dutch Smartlappen I just wanted to share this song... It's a song she sang for a fundraiser program on Dutch national TV. The way she brings this song, passion, emotion and sadness (meant sadness) is for me where Dutch music stands for, straight from the heart.... And she resembles that in this song like no other...

Have a great day !!!

Wow. I totally didn't see that coming in the Andre Hazes jr. song Leef. First sad and slow and suddenly some sort of humppa or polka song. :D https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humppa

The songs you listed are very similar to Finnish popular music called iskelmä musiikki = schlager music. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schlager_music

Thank's for sharing these! :) Now I'm seriously thinking (not) that I should so a similar post, but of course Finnish music. Except that I'm not a big fan of old or new iskelmämusiikki and I don't want the most popular songs to stick in to my head for days and days. :D

haha yes, the song of Hazes jr. is a real folk song, starting seriously... But I guess that in most countries they have perhaps similar songs/music...

Thanks for your comment, appreciate it !!

I always associated dutch with dance/house/electronic music. Speaking of music is there any good festivals in Netherlands over summer?

Yes there are, Pinkpop (next weekend) With Foo Fighters, Snow Patrol among others. Then we have Lowlands, that's more a alternative festival. And 'Zwarte Cross' that's near our hometown. We are going to Zwarte Cross because Volbeat is closing act and my youngest son is die hard fan :), and there are some smaller festivals.. With music Holland is a kind of festival country...

Nice! Just asking because we will be travelling through Europe this summer and next and always on the lookout for different festivals - there are so many to chose from!

Well I think the dutch festivals are going to be a problem then, because they are sold out months in advance... but there are some small and also free festivals, that could be a good alternative :)

Yeah there a few around Europe that have already sold out - didnt get in quick enough :(
