I picked up the mic stand and got a guitar tuner and and capo while I was at it then rushed home to try and record again. I was correct in my assessment that the mic was too far, the raw guitar and raw vocals sound so much clearer now.
I am so happy with how this turned out!
I spent about 4 hours recording first one guitar and one vocal track, then two extra vocal tracks and an extra guitar track. I found that the lower octave singing, while quite weak live, sound better in the recording. They also help make the chorus which is an octave higher much more powerful.
I tried some strange backup singing and added a lot of reverband delay to the second guitar which is more sparse. This finally gave me the ambience I was looking for. There's also distorion on a vocal double track which is at a lower volume.
I feel as if this song is totally new to me! It's grown up. It's no longer sleeping on daddy's couch. It's not asking for money. It can pay it's own bills!
The mixing is still weak and I've gotta find a way to balance these tracks better. I need to cut out the extra vocals and guitar in places where there is too much going on. I might change a few parts as far as the backup vocals are concerned. Also want to add some bass and sparse percussion. I hope to share the results with you soon!
Come take a look inside my mind at I+Everything
i look forward to hearing it
