Something in music: origin
One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.
One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.
‘Something’ in Music 272
Something Old
Our “something old” in this edition is “Ukiah/The Captain And Me” recorded by the American rock band The Doobie Brothers and written by band member Tom Johnson. “Ukiah” and “The Captain And Me” are the last two tracks on the group’s 1973 platter The Captain And Me.
Something New
Our “something new” this time is the recently released live performance video of “Heavy Load.” The song was written and recorded by the Los Angeles, California-based singer-songwriter and guitarist Heather Anne Lomax. The tune is actually the title track from her 2014 disc Heavy Load.
According to her official website the album was released “under her previous name Michael-Ann [and] was voted one of the Top 10 Americana Records from LA, and won Robert Oermann’s ‘DisCovery of the Week Award’ by Music Row Magazine in Nashville.” The video features Lomax on vocals and acoustic guitar, Zachary Ross on electric guitar, and Jason Hiller on acoustic bass.
Something Borrowed
Our “something borrowed” this time is the song “Maggie's Farm” written by American artist Bob Dylan and for his 1965 platter titled Bringing It All Back Home. This updated audio adaptation is by Jay (Ryan) & The Cooks. The cover cut was first included on the group’s 2018 11-track disc titled Up the Mississippi.
Something Blue
Last but not least, our “something blue” for this edition is the song “I Don’t Have The Blues” by the Taos, New Mexico-based trio of singer-songwriters and musicians The Rifters. The song is featured on the group’s album titled The Great River which dropped in 2011. (You can read all about the act’s new album right here
