Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.

‘Something’ in Music 274

Something Old

Our “something old” in this edition is the classic cut “She Said, She Said” recorded by The Beatles. The song was actually written by John Lennon with a little help from George Harrison. It first appeared on their 1966 platter titled Revolver. Lennon called it "an 'acidy' song."

Something New

Our “something new” this time is the new music video for the song "Revenuer" written and recorded by American singer-songwriter, Rod Picott. The song is off his most recent release, Paper Hearts and Broken Arrows. In a recent e-communique Picott discussed the music video.

He said: "This video was filmed by Neilson Hubbard and Joshua Britt. They make beautiful work and have worked with Jason Isbell, John Prine and Lucinda Williams. It was a sweltering day when we filmed. We all but melted and my thrift store shoes dug a raw hole in the back of my right heel."

Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” this time is the song “Donnez-moi.” The song was written by singer-songwriter/guitarists Anne Coste and Jacinthe Madelin, a.k.a. Les Frangines, (The Sisters). It first appeared on their 2019 album Les Frangines. This new cover is by New York City-based, award winning singer-songwriter and producer Lili Roquelin.

Roquelin’s signature sound is a blend of folk, pop, and rock music. In a message on social media Roquelin briefly discussed the origin of the recently recorded music video. She said: “I had originally made it for my childhood friend Audrey's birthday.”

She said: “Hope you enjoy it! Watch for the butterflies flying in your face!” Autographed CDs and digital music postcards are available on her official website.

Something Blue

Last but not least, our “something blue” for this edition is the song “These Blues” written and recorded by American singer-songwriter and musician Jon Geiger. The tune is off his 2018 album Jon Geiger Live.

If you’d like to hear more of his music and are in the area, you’re in luck! Geiger and his band are currently on tour in California. According to a recent email, they will soon be continuing their “ascent on the Los Angeles music scene” complete with Geiger’s “unique blend of captivating guitar work, soaring vocals and artful songwriting.”
