Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.

‘Something’ in Music 275

Something Old

Our “something old” in this edition is the classic cut “Centerfield” written and recorded by American singer-songwriter and musician John Fogerty. It is the title track from his third solo platter, Centerfield, which dropped back in 1985. Fogerty actually played all the instruments on this disc himself.

Something New

Our “something new” this time is the new single and music video “Will Power” written and recorded by the Los Angeles, California-based singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist known as Freedom Heartsong. In a recent e-communique Heartsong discussed the new release. He said:

“‘Will Power’ is exceptionally special to me, as it really exemplifies the heart and soul of my musical sound. That stompin', bluesy, swampy goodness is prolific in many of my favorite influences, and I wanted the entirety of the song to have that feel. The intro came to me a while back, while I was going through all sorts of tough times in life.”

He added: “It was kind of a personal anthem and mantra for a bit, reminding me that whatever comes, I won't give up or quit, and will carry on with persistence and determination. The rest of the song tells the story familiar to anyone who might find themselves in a tough situation, feeling weighed down and worn out. In my experience, the only way out of a situation or feeling like that is to harness the energy of your ‘will power’ and direct to the most constructive channels possible. To pick yourself up off the ground and keep going.”

He concluded: “It also is very specifically talking about changing behaviors or patterns that don't serve you anymore as you evolve, and addressing unhealthy recurring cycles, through conscious thought and effort. This is a song of motivation, persistence, determination, strength, and courage, and a reminder that we have the power within us to overcome any obstacle. When the future looks just like the past, I don't want this feeling to last, so I reach way down deep in my soul, and pull out that will power gold."

Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” this time is the song “Muskrat Love” written and originally recorded by Willis Alan Ramsey in 1972. It was most famously covered by Captain & Tennille in 1976. This custom-made under-the-covers cover music video is by the American singer-songwriter and musician Shanna in a Dress who famously “refuses to wear pants.” She said a friend named “Jay reached out to me to get a custom-song video of the sexiest song I've ever heard for him and his girlfriend Alta.... so here ya have it.”

Something Blue

Last but not least, our “something blue” for this edition is the song “Drowning In Blue.” It was written and recorded by Phoenix, Arizona-based blues rockers Until The Sun. It is the title track for the band’s second album Drowning In Blue which dropped in 2021.

In a post on social media the group briefly described the song. They stated: “‘Drowning in Blue’ is a contemporary blues song about being unreceptive to genuine love and remaining trapped in a perpetual state of emotional apathy.” The track features lyricist Brandon Teskey on guitars, Bruce Jensen on vocals and bass, and Chris Tex on drums.
