Something in music: origin
One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.
One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.
‘Something’ in Music 278
Something Old
Our “something old” in this edition is the classic cut “Cat Scratch Fever”. It was written and recorded by American rock musician Ted Nugent. It was the title track of his 1977 platter Cat Scratch Fever. It’s famous for its signature guitar riff and has been covered by other acts.
Something New
Our “something new” this time is the new song and music video from the Ophelias’ Leslie Medford titled “Leslie’s Dream.” According to a recent email, this is meant to be a “moody, brooding psych with a motorik heart and a throbbing political conscience.” Medford reportedly “still dreams big.” This track is meant to “mobilize thought, booty-shaking, and an ecstatic, whooping, mosh pit of change.”
Something Borrowed
Our “something borrowed” this time is the song “Can’t Find My Way Home” written by English singer-songwriter/musician Steve Winwood. The song first appeared on his supergroup’s self-titled 1969 vinyl Blind Faith. This sincere, stripped-down cover cut from 2022 is by American singer-songwriter and “Americana hypnotist” Bill Scorzari. Check out his most recent release titled The Crosswinds of Kansas.
Something Blue
Finally, our “something blue” this edition is a cover of the song “Stuttering Blues” reportedly written by The Five Scamps. This audio adaptation is by the American band known as The Insomniacs featuring founding member Dean Mueller. It is included on the band’s 2007 disc titled Left Coast Blues. Read a piece on Mueller’s debut solo album, Life Ain’t All Roses right here.
