Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.

‘Something’ in Music 289

Something Old

Our “something old” in this edition is the classic cut “Show Biz Kids” written and recorded by the American music act known as Steely Dan. The song was the first single off the performing pair’s platter, Countdown to Ecstasy which hit the record racks in 1973. Rick Derringer guests on slide guitar.

Something New

Our “something new” this time is the new single “Standing on the Edge” by Justin Trawick and the Common Good. It was written by the Washington, DC-based singer, songwriter and band leader Justin Trawick. Trawick briefly spoke of the new release on social media.

He said: “My new single is out! Stream [it] while you’re going about your day today and make sure to follow my band. Help support my band by sharing this single with your friends.” If you’d like to hear the act perform live, check out one of these upcoming performances:

Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” this time is the song “Slow Burn” which was co-written by American singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves, Daniel Tashian, and Ian Fitchuk for Musgraves’ 2018 album Golden Hour. This 2021 dedicated cover is by American country music singer-songwriter and guitarist Jaime Wyatt. In a post on social media Wyatt briefly discussed the cover.

She said: “I’ve always loved this song. The melody and chord progression remind me of Neil Young, but it’s also psychedelic. I’m playing a Gibson 335 through a 60s Princeton with a Keely compressor pedal and MXR carbon copy.”

Something Blue

Finally, our “something blue” this edition is the song “Broken & Blue (featuring Joe Bonamassa).” The song features blues rock star Joe Bonamassa. It’s credited to Texas-based blues-rock singer and guitarist Ally Venable, Bonamassa, and musician and producer Tom Hambridge.

The track is off Venable’s latest release Real Gone. If you like this cut and would like to hear Venable perform live; you’re in luck. She is currently on tour. Here are some remaining tour dates:
