Something in music: origin
One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.
One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.
‘Something’ in Music 294
Something Old
Our “something old” in this edition is the classic cut “The Seeker” recorded by the Brit band the Who. The song was written by band member Pete Townshend. It was first released as a single in 1970 and included on their 1971 platter Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy.
Something New
Our “something new” this time is the song and music video “Sweeter” by Switzerland-based Americana singer-songwriter Beth Wimmer. The song was written by Wimmer with an arrangement by Mike Bischof. She co-produced the song with Bischof as well.
The song is slated to appear on her new EP, Nature, which drops in August 2023. On social media Wimmer briefly described the new single. She said the song is infused with the feeling of both new love and the arrival of summer. The track features Wimmer on acoustic guitar, percussion, and vocals, David Raven on drums, and Bischof on electric and bass guitar.
Something Borrowed
Our “something borrowed” this edition is the song “Yesterday” which was written by former Beatles singer-songwriter, composer, and musician Paul McCartney and recorded by the English band the Beatles in 1965. This funky audio adaptation is by the group Scary Pockets. Recorded in 2017, the track features vocalist India Carney; Jack Conte on bass, Rob Humphreys on drums, and Yan Lerman on guitar.
Something Blue
Finally, our “something blue” this edition is the song “Blues is My Best Friend.” It is credited to Texas-based blues-rock singer and guitarist Ally Venable, Richard Fleming, and musician and producer Tom Hambridge. The tune is off Venable’s latest disc Real Gone. If you like this cut and would like to hear Venable perform live; you’re in luck. She is currently on tour. Catch her at The Peach Music Festival in Scranton, PA through July 2nd.
