Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.

‘Something’ in Music 339

Something Old

Our “something old” this edition is the classic cut “This Time” originally recorded by Canadian rock star Bryan Adams. He co-wrote the song with Jim Vallance. It was the third single from his 1983 platter titled Cuts Like a Knife. The video was actually shot close to Edwards Air Force Base, California.

Something New

Our “something new” this time is the new song “Feelings Rotten” by the unsigned artist known only as YNS Bear. On social media, Bear refers to himself as a “Youtube musician” and has been one since some time in 2020. He is originally from Wanblee, South Dakota, and is currently based in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the 1971 song "Angel From Montgomery” written by John Prine and perhaps most famously recorded by Bonnie Raitt in 1974. This live version is by the Texas-based Americana recording artist Libby Koch. If you’d like to see Koch in person and you’re in the Waller Texas area, you’re in luck. The Houston native will be performing live at the Location 6 Brewing Company on Saturday, November 18th, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $10.00 in advance or $15.00 at the door.

Something Blue

Last but certainly not least, our “something blue” in this edition is the track titled “Blue Reflections.” It is the most recent release from the indie urban act known only as Cardiac Da Pulse. The track features performer Brit Nicole. The cut is the premiere release from the recently released album titled Blue Roses.
