Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.

‘Something’ in Music 340

Something Old

Our “something old” this edition is the classic cut “Thunder Road” written and recorded by American songwriter and guitarist Bruce Springsteen. It’s the lead-in for his popular 1975 platter titled Born to Run. It was inspired by a poster for the 1958 Robert Mitchum motion picture “Thunder Road.”

Something New

Our “something new” this time is the new song “Number One” written and recorded by the indie artist singer-songwriter and guitarist known as Ben. Also known as Shuli Ben, he is currently based out of Migdal Haemeqck, Hazafon in Israel. It features guest musician Guy Sod Moria on electric guitar.

Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the song “Somewhere in My Car” written and first recorded by Australian country music singer Keith Urban in 2013. This dedicated cover version is by country pop artist Lily Nelsen. The track includes Nelsen on vocals, beatboxer Sebastian Ciolos, and Cassie Trabucco on vocal harmonies. It harkens back to 2017.

Something Blue

Last but not least, our “something blue” this edition is the song “All Day Blues” written and first recorded by SanDiego, California-based singer-songwriter Michele Lundeen. The song is from her 2004 release Song Inside Me. This is a live version recorded at the New Blues Festival IV. It features Lundeen on vocals, Jim Woodard on guitar, John Simons on bass, Walter Gentry on saxophone, and Ric Lee on drums.
