Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.

‘Something’ in Music 347

Something Old

Our “something old” this edition is the classic cut “About a Girl” recorded by the American rock band Nirvana. The song was written by the group’s singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain. It originally appeared on their debut disc, Bleach, which dropped in June 1989 and focused on his girlfriend Tracy Marander.

Something New

Our “something new” this time is the “For All We Know”. This is American jazz singer and songwriter Halie Loren’s cover of a 1934 tune that was co-written by John Fred Coots and Samuel Lewis. Halie Loren co-produced the cut with Morgan Moore. Learn more about her on her official website.

Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the song "I Want You (She's so Heavy)" recorded by the Beatles and written primarily by John Lennon for their 1969 platter, Abbey Road. This live instrumental adaptation is by the Brit-American acid blues act, the Bees Deluxe. The track features Allyn Dorr on bass, Carol Band on keyboards, Paul Giovine on drums, and Conrad Warre on guitar.

If you’d like to see the band perform live, you’re in luck! They’re now on tour in support of their new album titled Hallucinate right now. See the dates below:

Something Blue

Finally, our “something blue” this edition is “What’s It Like To Live (Demo/Live Performance” written and recorded by musician and songwriter BrxnDxn. On social media, the indie artist noted that it is part of his Boxxx EP project. He briefly spoke of the track saying: “[It’s] another blues song I wrote. This one [is] about a personal struggle we probably all feel and question at some point in this journey.” He added: “I hope you're having a great day, and feeling good.”
