Something in music: origin
One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.
One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.
‘Something’ in Music 348
Something Old
Our “something old” this edition is the classic cut “Go Now” by The Moody Blues. The song was co-written by Larry Banks and Milton Bennett. Bessie Banks first recorded it in 1964. The Moody Blues recorded and released this version months later. It featured Denny Laine on guitar and lead vocals and appears on their platter The Magnificent Moodies.
Something New
Our “something new” this time is the track “Spin Me Round.” As your rockin’ writer puts e-pen to e-paper, it is the most recent release from the independent artist and self-styled digital creator H.G. LoveWell. LoveWell is based out of Corpus Christi, Texas.
In a post on social media, he reported that his song “didn't happen by accident, and it didn't happen by luck. it happened intentionally, and on purpose.” He concludes: “I put in the work relentlessly, and I got a whole stack of it to show and I'm proud of it cuz I worked hard on it. And I will keep pushing my limits to create even better art.”
Something Borrowed
Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the traditional song "House of the Rising Sun" which is often attributed to Georgia Turner and Bert Martin and most famously recorded by the band The Animals in 1964. This cover is by the London-based session band known as the Blue Ohio Railroad Gang. In a message on social media the band noted: “When the Gang warms up before they start recording their original songs, magic happens. [This song] is an example of this.”
Something Blue
Last but not least, our “something blue” this edition is the song “These Blues” by Southern California-based singer-songwriter and guitarist Jon Geiger. This live track is off his most recent release, Live At Harvelle's. If you’d like to see Geiger perform live and in the area, you’re in luck.
Geiger will once again be performing at Harvelle's Santa Monica, on Friday, December 15th at 9:00 p.m. Admission is $10.00. For tickets and additional information, visit the club’s official website.
