Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.

‘Something’ in Music 350

Something Old

Our “something old” this edition is the classic cut “Mind Your Manners” recorded by the American rock group Pearl Jam. Released as the premiere single off the band’s tenth studio album, Lightning Bolt which dropped in 2013 . The song was written by singer Eddie Vedder and lead guitarist Mike McCready.

Something New

Our “something new” this time is the song “Pyaar Hua Ikrar Howa 2.0” by the Karachi, Pakistan-based independent artist R A Martin Andrew. In a post on social media, Andrew explained the title of the track and discussed its meaning. He said: “The phrase ‘Pyaar Howa Ikrar Howa Hai’ translates to ‘Love has happened, and acceptance has happened.’

“This expression is a poetic and romantic way to convey the mutual acknowledgment and commitment between two individuals in a romantic relationship. It signifies a moment when both parties recognize and confess their love for each other. This phrase is often associated with the joy and depth of emotions that come with the realization of love and the mutual agreement to move forward together in a relationship.”

Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the 1971 song “Ain’t No Sunshine” written by American singer-songwriter and musician Bill Withers. This dedicated cover was recorded live by Southern California-based singer-songwriter and guitarist Jon Geiger. track is off his most recent release, Live At Harvelle's.

If you’d like to see Geiger perform live and, in the area, you’re in luck. Geiger will be performing at Harvelle's Santa Monica, on Friday, December 15th at 9:00 p.m. Admission is $10.00. For tickets and additional information, visit the club’s website.

Something Blue

Finally, our “something blue” this edition is the song “Delusion Blues” by the Seattle, Washington-based act Black Nite Crash.
