Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.

‘Something’ in Music 352

Something Old

Our “something old” this edition is the classic cut “Get Off My Cloud” originally recorded by the Brit band The Rolling Stones. The song was co-written by band members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Released as a single in 1965, it climbed to the top of the charts.

Something New

Our “something new” this time is the track named “Dis-C” by a Chandigarh, India-based act named BeatUniverse. Also known as Karan Panaych, his current signature sound is “trance and dance.” This instrumental audio offering is a musical mélange of trance and electronic dance music posted earlier this month.

Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the seasonal song "Please Come Home for Christmas" co-written by American blues singer Charles Brown and Gene Redd in 1960. This dedicated duet is by members of the North Carolina-based Americana indie-folk band known as The Pinkerton Raid. Got that Christmas spirit? If so, don’t miss their new Christmas cover singles “White Winter Hymnal” and “Christmas Time is Here.”

Something Blue

Last but not least, our “something blue” in this edition is the song “Blue (Demo Version)” by the horror punk/metal band from Huntsville, Alabama known as Cancerslug. This torrid track is off their 2021 disc titled Plague Demos (2020-2021). If you want to dive into the mosh pit live, you may be in luck! The band is heading out on tour! Visit their official website for further details.
