Something in music: origin

One evening at a hot, trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had taken more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal is about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those very same terms could be applied to music too: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. The rest is history.

‘Something’ in Music 364

Something Old

Our “something old” this edition is the classic cut “Dance the Night Away” originally recorded by the US rock band Van Halen. It was co-written by the group members David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen, and Alex Van Halen. The song was the second single off the platter Van Halen II which hit the record racks back in 1979.

Something New

Our “something new” this time is the new number “Time” by MRB. MRB is described online as “an original exciting rock trio based in Looe in Cornwall.” MRB’s material is reportedly original and the indie act’s music spans a number of different music genres including rock, metal, and progressive rock.

Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the song “Watch Out” which was written by Peter Green and first included on the 1969 platter Fleetwood Mac in Chicago. This cover is by the Brit/American acid blues band known as Bees Deluxe. This track was recorded live in the studio. It includes guest musician Bruce Mattson on keyboards.

This adaptation is included on the act’s 2004 album Family Tree: A Tribute To Fleetwood Mac. If you’d like to see them live, you’re in luck. Bees Deluxe is on tour now. Check out these upcoming dates:

Wednesday March 6
The Lizzie Rose Music Room
Tuckerton, NJ

Friday March 8
Jamey's House of Music
Landsdowne, PA

Something Blue

Last but not least, our “something blue” this edition is the blues bit “Emu Blues” by the Brisbane, Australia-based act known as The Daisy Rifles. The Daisy Rifles is a married, performing duo Rebecca Geissa (drums and backing vocals) and Dylan Ferrier (lead vocals and guitar), who are often backed by an assortment of other artists. The song was written by Dylan and appears on their 2023 disc titled Bustard Head. The track also includes Paul McCarthy on bass.
