Something in music: the origin

One night at a trendy L.A. nightclub on a rare solo outing, yours truly found himself standing alone at the bar preparing to review the upcoming act. Before he had scribbled down more than a few notes, however, he was bookended by a pair of vivacious vixens who insisted on engaging your rockin’ writer in cozy conversation. Strangely, the subject of “marriage” arose.

One of the young ladies noted that when a gal’s about to get hitched, she needs “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue.” Your provocative penman was immediately inspired. After all, those same terms could be applied to music: “Something old” or classic, “something new” or recently released, “something borrowed”, a cover, and “something blue”, a blues song or a song with “blue” in the title. And the rest is history…

‘Something’ in Music 367

Something Old

Our “something old” in this edition is the classic cut “Hammerhead” originally recorded by the US punk rock group known as The Offspring. It was written by frontman Dexter Holland and first appeared on the band’s eighth disc, Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace which dropped back in 2008.

Something New

Our “something new” this time is the new single “Gone in a Day” by the Madison, Wisconsin-based quartet known as Armchair Boogie. It’s off the group’s upcoming album titled Hard Times & Deadlines and has a drop date of March 15th, 2024. Founded in 2015, the band roster includes Ben Majeska, who initially wrote the song, on guitar and vocals, John Augie Dougherty on banjo, harmonica, and vocals, Eli Frieders on bass and backup vocals, and Denzel Connor on drums and percussion, piano, and backup vocals.

Here the focus is on the emotionality of a no-win situation. It features guest musician Jeremy Garrett on the fiddle. (Keep your peepers peeled for your rockin’ writer’s review of the album on another website.)

Something Borrowed

Our “something borrowed” for this edition is the song “Beauty And The Beast” written by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken for the 1991 film Beauty and the Beast. This dedicated cover is by the Brothers Cazimero–musical performers Robert and Roland Cazimero. It was recorded live and appears on their 1993 album Caz Live. If you’d like to see what brother Robert Cazimero is up to as a solo act and are in the Los Angeles area, you’re in luck!

Something Blue

Last but not least, our “something blue” in this edition is the track titled “Light Blue Sun (Prelude)”. The song appears on singer and violinist Lili Haydn’s 2003 album, Light Blue Sun. This cut was written by guitarist and co-producer Corky James. It features Haydn on violin, co-producer and bass player Bill Laswell, Karsh Kale on drums, DJ Sherlock on keyboards, and Bahar on vocals.
