[5.1ch] Magdeburg Cathedral: Woody - Cascade Kingdom & Star Trek Nemesis MedleysteemCreated with Sketch.

in music •  6 years ago

After two years of abstinence, time was ripe again for another session at the huge Magdeburg Cathedral main organ. Unfortunately there was no time to practice any pieces beforehand, so the "private concert with passing public" somehow turned into a more or less technical experiment:

This album is my first disc completely recorded and mastered using surround sound material, which is available both as a CD with stereo sound and as a DVD with 5.1 surround sound! That way, a very realistic room impression can be imparted to the listener — which is definitely recommended to any proud owner of a 5.1 HomeCinema sound system.

Since the audio was recorded live during the regular opening hours, on the one hand there was no chance to cancel any ambient noise. On the other hand, this "noise" — inquisitive children included — of course adds up to the atmosphere in the building. So the album is "live and unfiltrated" in a literal meaning (rather than just "unstrained"), including a bunch of flubbed notes...

Current versions of Media Player Classic are able to properly play multi-channel FLAC files.
Like all my other recordings, the music is completely improvised, so there is no sheet music available.

Welcome to Steem! Good to have you here... Would you like to participate in our Secrets of Organ Playing Contest?

Hi @organduo, I'm glad you finally asked! :-)

Since I followed the latest contest result with about one and a half eyes, I was thinking about it already, but finally refrained from it since I don't have any video recording equipment (no cam, no smartphone, etc.).

However, there's a number of about 200 pieces from the past 7 years on YouTube already from which I could pick a choice, but that would be cheating, right? :-D

Jokes aside -- does it have to contain a recorded video to participate or would audio be sufficient?

Thanks my friend! I'll have to think about it because it does changes the game. The purpose of this contest is to motivate people to practice more effectively. If one would submit a work recorded in the past, then it does nothing to the person's present or future motivation to practice.

If, however, one submits a specially recorded audio for this contest, then motivation is still there but... There is no way of knowing if the audio wasn't edited. Meaning if it was recorded in one take.

Do you see the problem for a dishonest person (obviously not you)?

Yes, of course, and I completely agree with your arguments. In turn, this means that I would have to pick up a camera somewhere else first before I can start participating in the contest. Nothing impossible so far, but I think I'll need to get used to that a bit since I never caught myself playing on camera before. (Guess I'll be late for week 5 or even 6 then, unfortunately.)

Since I have the possibility to directly use the (higher quality) audio from my Hauptwerk VPO set, I would like to dub it onto the video -- but I think that would be considered cheating either. So I came up with the idea of putting together two versions of the same video for comparison: One with the original room & ambience audio for "verification" purposes and one with the hi-fi VPO set audio for those who're more "demanding" in terms of sound quality.

Does that sound like a proper solution to you?

I have no problem with high quality audio from Hauptwerk.

Actually, I have to think about allowing audio in general, I think. Maybe there will not be dishonest people here. Not sure yet. Need some thinking to do.
