MUSIC REVIEW #2 :: Lana del Rey

in music •  7 years ago

Hi everyone!

Okay so.. Where to begin?

As you know, this is just a review, not her Wikipedia page, so if you would like more information, go ahead and check that out! I am just putting this out there as a brief description of what I have found the artist's sound to be, so that you can see if it is something you would be interested in checking out or not!

Lana del Rey (Real name Lizzy Grant) has quite a few albums, and almost every album has a different sound.

Here is a quick breakdown of the general vibes:

Lust for Life(2017)

Very happy, summery, Coachella vibe; and a mix between hippie and street grunge. She literally has songs featuring artists like Sean Ono Lennon, and Stevie Nicks; as well as songs featuring A$AP Rocky and the Weeknd, so you can just imagine.

Here is an example song from the album

Honeymoon(2015)

100% SOFT GRUNGE ! A lot of focus on very soft and pretty, almost orchestral vocals. All of the songs are very calm, and almost oceanic. Revolving around broken love stories, in tracks like "Salvatore" and "Swan Song".

Ultraviolence(2014)

This one is very, well, if Brooklyn and Miami had a baby. ALSO revolving around broken love, but a lot more upbeat. There is almost a tribal sound to this album, but a tribe of girls with feathers in their hair, who live downtown and got to poetry meetings. Makes sense, right?

Born to Die and Born to Die Paradise Edition(2012 and 2013)

This one was just as confusing as the others. It had a lot of songs on it that went quite mainstream, such as "Video Games"and "Blue Jeans". It is also about some pretty sad themes, like losing a lover, but it is very pretty and rhythmic. This is where her core sound, that has been present throughout her albums, starts emerging. A tiny bit more of a vintage sound was included in this one than in her more recent albums.

Sirens(2012), Lana del Ray (2010) and No Kung Fu(2007)

These fall under the category of her older, much lesser known music, with a very demo kind of sound. It focuses on themes like trailer parks, strippers and living a very simple life without much money around, but not in a negative way. Almost like an opposite Cinderella story, Lizzy (Lana del Rey) came from a good home, with enough money, and in these albums she fantasizes about living a much poorer life, with simple pleasures. I quite like this, and a lot of the songs on here are very poetic. These albums also have the most vintage sound of all of them.
She hasn't uploaded any of these onto her official Youtube pages, so it is hard to find songs that aren't copyrighted material. But if you search any of the album titles you will find the music!

I would definitely regard myself as a huge fan, and I have been since about 2013. I adore every album, and I know the lyrics to literally every song. I know, I'm a geek.

So if any of these albums sound like they may be appealing to you, go ahead and check them out!

I'm a big Lana Del Rey fan. Honeymoon is arguably a masterpiece front to back. I felt like it didn't get the attention it deserved. Have to admit her latest album doesn't really appeal to me. I've tried it multiple times and it's just missing the mark for me somehow. Maybe because Honeymoon was sheer perfection and my expectations are too high now.

Agreed! I loved Honeymoon, even the photos and art for the album was gorgeous. I quite liked Lust for Life, definitely not as much as the others so I know what you mean. A lot of people who I know that are big fans didn't enjoy it. She set the bar very high with the other albums! It took me a while to get into it, but I quite liked some of the tracks. Thank you so much for commenting! I really like your page!
