As far as breakout albums go, "Siamese Dream" sets the bar incredibly high. According to a reader's poll by Rolling Stone, this album holds 6 out of the top-10 songs by The Smashing Pumpkins-- and 4 of those are in the top 5. The album leads off with "Cherub Rock," a song whose lyrics directly call out the hipsters and sellout-culture of the time. While this was not the best-performing single of the album, it quickly became a fan favorite and is widely recognized 24 years later. The heavy distortion and complicated layering became somewhat of a trademark of the band, creating a sound that feels more progressive than alternative at times.
