🎶 Music Discoveries - Symbiz - Chinese Rap + Dancehall * Dubstep = Yeeruh ?!

Brain.exe - TILT!

I just discovered Symbiz on my hypemachine and I am blown away.

The Track "Faai Di (快啲)" was the first one I heard and something immediately captured my attention. There was some sort of a special groove to those punchy electronic beats and the edgy Chinese rap on top of it.

I wanted to check out more about that Symbiz-sound. What I discovered was quite surprising and gave me bit of cognitive dissonance, in a good way...

I'll tell you all about it, but first, take a listen to "Faai Di (快啲)" by Symbiz from 2017:

I don't know about you, but to me, that was FRESH.

Now at this point I would like to ask you to follow along and guess with me where Symbiz are from.

I quite frankly don't understand a word of what this guy is rapping about and I can only guess it's probably Chinese. The whole setting of the video being in Uganda seemed unusual for that kind of a sound, though.

One of the next tracks I found was from 2013 and called "Yeeruh".

Pow! The crowd at that live show in Zimbabwe was absolutely epic.

So now we know: Symbiz are these two asian looking guys who obviously know how to rock a crowd in Africa.

My narrow-minded white European brain was a bit confused: Are these dudes from China and made it to fame in Africa? Probably their parents are some Hong-Kong Chinese investors into African infrastructure?! They don't really look Chinese, though. More like Japanese or Korean?!

and then I found this one: "Who Cares" from 2011

Straight up Dubstep with a funky musical intermission... but wait... those names in the credits?!? Ermmm...

At this point, before the reveal, do let me know in the comments where you would have placed their roots.

The Korean-German brothers "Buddysym" and "ChrisImbiss" are the two members of Berlin-based Symbiz Sound – an innovative producer duo and live act on the global bass scene.

These guys are German! Mind blown! Pew!

At least the hunch about the Korean looks wasn't totally off!

And then... I even find out they played at the fusion festival in 2016 (where I totally went myself and obviously missed them) and 2013. How did I not hear about these dudes all those years?

Well, better late than never :P

Did you like those tracks?

Woooosh! I’m really impressed, totally digging the sound! Maybe they’ll attend the festival this year again?

Thanks for sharing this awesome discovery fraenk :)

Heh... If they make an appearance again this year, I'll make sure I don't miss them again...

What a story and discovery. We can be quite a bit fooled :) BTW, Fusion 2016 and 2013 are quite familiar for me, but also I did not spot them there. 2018 will be there again.

ahh... June 27th... See you there ;)
