It will interest you to know that there are other ways to produce hydrogen from charcoal. The first method was discovered by Ikuko Akumoto and his team of researchers at the wakayama university. What he did was add charcoal to water and pass a laser beam in nanoseconds pulse at Room temperature and pressure and this produced hydrogen. Remember that water consists of hydrogen and oxygen.
Another method of producing hydrogen from charcoal is through the process of gasification. In this process, charcoal is burned at a very high temperature of about 1200-1500 degree Celsius in a reactor.
