Usually a doctorate is considered the hardest to get, but then that leads to the question of in what discipline.
Unless you are a math prodigy, it would make sense that a degree in quantum physics is probably harder to get than a degree is some other subject.
The best advice is to pursue what makes you happy and only get a degree if it makes sense for your career. Many times people end up with more debt chasing an advanced degree than they can make once they have it.
The degree you're looking for (at least in the sciences) is called "Doctor of Science" and you can read all about it on Wikipedia. Several European countries have a higher diploma called habilitation
I think any degree for me would be hard. I probably would be better at doing it now that I am older but in my early days to keep me in class for another 5 years after 3 years in the army I wouldn't have lasted.
All college degrees are hard to get because they all require discipline and consistent effort from the individual. People choose college degrees based on their strengths or their professional path. No one degree is better than the other because they are all solving a problem in the world regardless of how minute the problem may seem. So all college degrees are hard to get because they all require discipline and dedication to attain them
