I would recommend not tagging the OP. What purpose would it serve? If they're getting notifications for mentions and for replies, the tag will just annoy them with two simultaneous notifications. If they're not getting notifications, the tag doesn't do anything at all. My approach is to try to make my comments as well-written and thoughtful as possible, and try to get noticed that way.

I understand what you are saying and I don't disagree, I was just curious. I notice a lot of people doing it and I just wondered. Do you ever find occasion where you do tag in a comment?

Yeah, I guess occasionally it seems right to address the author using the @ symbol.
