Muting Proxy - What if we subscribe to other accounts' muting lists?

in mutingproxy •  6 years ago  (edited)

MutingProxy is a yet another experimental and ridiculous app™ by @emrebeyler where you can subscribe to the accounts you trust, and follow their muting list automatically.

This is not a one-time sync operation, once you subscribed to an account's muting list; you will also get updates of the muting list, automatically, in the background.

How it works?

  • Login with SteemConnect
  • Write an account name to follow their muting list
  • Click Subscribe

All set. You can do that for multiple authors. You can audit all mute operations broadcasted via the app at the logs page.

Steemmconnect and Security

The application uses steemconnect tokens to interact with the chain on your account's behalf.

Only required/asked scope is custom json, means that muting proxy can not vote, post, or comment on your behalf.

Things can be done with the Custom JSON scope:

  • Follow, Unfollow
  • Mute, Unmute

If you're skeptical about it, you can run the application yourself in a small VPS.

The idea

The original idea is come up here and @berniesanders created a bounty about it.

Thanks for the contribution, @emrebeyler! I've never muted anyone, but it seems like a very useful application for people who hate spam / don't want to deal with certain users. I haven't really kept up to date with how much RC certain transactions cost, but is there maybe a way to calculate or estimate this before subscribing to someone's muting list? This way you could give a warning about the amount that will be used, which could prevent people from accidentally using up all their RC.

One of the reasons I love seeing your contributions as they are all very interesting and unique in their own way, haha. Already looking forward to seeing what you come up with next.

Thank you for the review, @amosbastian.

Yeah, that sounds like a great addition. I put a warning in the footer but it would be awesome to know the RC costs on initial subscribe.

Thank you for your review, @amosbastian!

So far this week you've reviewed 5 contributions. Keep up the good work!

Is it one time only, or will one follow (haha) every step the subscribed account makes?
That could trigger some fun avalanches
:))
Or RC drains

The RC drainage would be huuuge ;)

Every step. Thats why you should subscribe to trusted people :D

Muting disco! Strobo on!
:)
So, we both are excluded, who would trust us? :))

Where is the exclude? 😶

I gotta say that this might be a very useful tool if you combine it with @minnowsupport. They mute all the accounts that got their rights to upvote posts with their bot taken away, so you'll get a "cleaner" steem if you follow their mute list.

oh, they mute more than 1000! (I don't do pagination, but it looks it's needed.)

https://mutingproxy.steeminator.com/account/minnowsupport/

It's possible with the current version to subcribe them. But, 1000 mutes may create high RC costs, beware. :)

@minnowsupport has more than 8000 muted users, so just to reiterate what @emrebeyley said; make sure you have enough RCs, or you may be waiting for steem to be usable for a while.

This is an idea I've been pitching to devs for months now. Although I'd like to see a baked-in solution that would be more accessible to every user, I'm glad to see someone taking the initiative and actually making it a reality.

Once this catches on a bit, account holders can essentially use this as an ad blocker, and there can be accounts that do nothing but mute users and create mute lists for different interests to subscribe to, which is sorely needed on this platform.

Sounds like a great tool - If someone or some service was to create a global "blacklist" of spammers, one could easily follow and therefore easily have a cleaner Steem :) Might not be necessary but definitely a nice option to have. Glad seeing you creating useful services like this and dpoll, etc.
Greets

Thank you! I believe the bigger credit should go to the @berniesanders on this since he's basically sponsored the app.

Meanwhile, we have talked with @themarkymark that, creating a couple of accounts for well-known blacklists using the global blacklist API may give a chance to people subscribing.

Ex: A newly created @steemcleaners-blacklist account constantly mutes spammers and we can subscribe their list via the app.

When you mute a user, you don't see their comments or posts anywhere they appear on the chain.

A mute/follow is listed on the blockchain, but it is obviously interface dependent, because obviously you can still see their comments and their posts using a blockchain explorer.
Interesting.
It now made rethink someone else's idea that a follow and a mute should not be blockchain operations.
Not agree and not oppose, just rethink and wonder.
