Fishing off the rocks - Caught my first Opaleye (Catch and cook)

in myhuntingfishing •  7 years ago

Today we decided to hit up the rocks again and this time we brought some shrimp for bait. I used a dropper loop rig with only one small hook and a 3/8 weight at the bottom. Most of the time today, small wrasse and small opaleye stole our shrimp right off the hook but some of the time we managed to hook them.

I have never caught an opaleye before, so I thought it would be pretty cool to catch and cook one. I've heard mixed things about this fish, some say it is a mushy fish that isn't good to eat at all, and some people say it is an amazing fish when fried. So with these mixed emotions about the fish itself for eating, I decided to find out for myself.

Here are the two smaller sized opaleye that I caught.

As you may notice, these fish get their name "opaleye" from their blueish green color eyes. So what I did was I filleted these two fish the best I could and removed the skin, then I fried it using my secret recipe. Heres what the fillets looked like after they were cooked.

Final verdict

The fish was not at all mushy or extremely fishy at all. The fish was alright. It's not the best tasting fish out there, but it's alright. I give it a 3/5.

Good stuff. Post more like this :) I would say I would like an action shot but I don't like bringing my phone out on my surfboard or on a run. So I'll use my imagination.

Will do! I try to get videos and stuff of it but its hard to fish and be focused while recording...I need a gopro ;)
