Residents cross the Water Toren from the Dutch colonial heritage on Balai Kota Street, Banda Aceh, Wednesday, 7 November 2018.
The tower which was built in 1880 was used to distribute water needs for the military in Banda Aceh during the war.
The Dutch came to Aceh in 1873, with the first attack which resulted in the killing of Major General JHR Kohler in the courtyard of the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque which is located adjacent to this water tower.
At that time the Dutch chose the city of Banda Aceh as the center of their military activities. The Netherlands is building infrastructure, one of which is this water tower. They call it Watertoren.
