[Mysteries] The Voynich Manuscript

in mystery •  7 years ago  (edited)

The Voynich Manuscript is a medieval illustrated codex that has baffled scholars and academics for over a century. It is believed to be dated to around the 15th century, as a result of carbon dating on the vellum. The text is written left to right, just like the majority of European languages, and includes mysterious, seemingly alien drawings and illustrations. It is named after a Polish book dealer, Wilfrid Voynich, who purchased the codex in 1912. In 1969, the manuscript was donated by Hans P. Kraus to Yale University's Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, where it is catalogued under call number MS 408. The library recently made the digital scans public for the purpose of inviting the general public to attempt to decipher the document.

Now, a Turkish father and son team believe they have cracked the mysterious set of pages. They believe that it is in a form of ancient Turkish, almost spelt out phonetically. Unfortunately many pages of the manuscript are missing, but the pages they have examined do indeed appear to be discussing the topics that many thought they would. Many believed that it was meant to serve as a pharmacopoeia or to address topics in medieval or early modern medicine, and the team's findings certainly seem to back this up.

You can view the team's findings in the YouTube video that I've included at the top of the page. It's a video that the team have put out explaining how they came to their conclusion, and it's fascinating to watch. There have been many claims of cracking the unknown codex, but most are little more than fantasy. If what the team states is in fact true, it's a great achievement for cryptography. The prospect that we may have an answer to this mysterious codex is exciting to say the least.

What do you think about this possible breakthrough? Let me know your thoughts in the comment section down below. This is just a quick one this time, but I have plans to post some longer more in depth posts revolving around the unknown and mysteries.
