I like to also point out the Codex Regius - this wikipedia article has a ton of relevant links.
I had been fascinated by Norse Mythology since an early age when I had access to my grandfathers library.

Thanks! Oh, wow. That's a good source I need to delve into. It's difficult not to be drawn into Norse myth, it's peculiar as its own, even with the similarities with other mythologies.

Norse mythology is a complete world view. An attempt to piece together the incomprehensible. It is a fascinating one. I learned about it as a kid and since forgotten much. But the basic concepts and some of the stories, moral and characters is still in use.

And yes, I'm Norwegian

Indeed, yes. I have often wondered if the Norse of old had a good understanding of the birth of the universe, it seems they understood the Bang and expansion. Good to have a Norwegian here, thanks for commenting!

And so many good stories there are. Midgardsormen and Fenris captivated me as a child. I think there even was comic books on them. I'll have to ask mom next time I go home... 😂

I was always fascinated by the Norse Mythology, although most exposure to it comes from games, movies and fantasy books. I'd like to read the original text (Poetic Edda) if I have the time and be in the mood. Until then, your summary will have to do!

It is interesting to notice the similarities in the mythologies of different cultures. Most of the big concepts are there in every cosmogony/mythology, adapted to each culture. For example, in Greek cosmogony, the Titan Kronos (Saturn) gives birth to Zeus who is hidden in a cave, drinking milk from a goat (Amalthea); when he comes of age, he rescues his brothers & sisters and together rebel and overthrow Kronos.

Chronologically, the source of all these mythologies and the shared patterns must have been the Sumerian mythology (the older one). I think these stories served the purpose you mention, to give life lessons & to strengthen community and family ties; since this wisdom is coming from the gods, it must be correct and the right thing to do. Also, it gives more credit to the King's Right to Rule, and the notion of Succession.

Thank-you! Indeed, yes, various mythologies share aspects. My knowledge of Mesopotamian mythology is lacking, though. And yes, the King's Rule is further honoured due to the mythology, chosen of Odin and so on (as seen in later posts about Jarl, Karl, and Thrall). The media has a lot correct about Norse, which is surprising, but also a lot incorrect (like Marvel's Thor. shudders in horror).

The Scandinavian connection is quite thin in WPtS. But I have quite a few characters and settings in other works. Jørgen imagines himself a type of Odin, and has his own Asgard.

Yeah. Listen to this. The creator of Wardruna is the guy that makes the music for the TV series Vikings, and also used to drum for Gorgoroth. Einar Selvik. The below is him singing Völuspo from the Edda Poetry(Or some rendition of it).

Lol. I probably didn't mention it earlier because there are female vocals in some songs. Very strong with the folk, but all or most of the songs are about the Elder Futhark, so the theme is damn interesting.
