Weekly review #3: Genomes, beaches and old wine

in myweek •  5 years ago  (edited)

What I am not proud of is skipping one week to write a review, but let’s get back on track! I published a lot of posts during that period, nonetheless none of it was a proper weekly review.

So in the beginning of the last week it was my first day at work. For steemians who still don’t know me, I am a computational biologist with a background in molecular biology currently researching breast cancer. It was an exciting first day in a new lab. It is located in the Genome building which is a part of Biopolis, an international research and development center for biomedical sciences in Singapore.

I am thinking about things I did last week and let’s just type whatever comes to my mind. Saturday was really cool because our housemates prepared traditional Chinese dinner for us – a hot pot – a little heater placed on the table and you put the spices and add various food inside to cook while you’re talking, drinking etc. We also had 18 year old wine served which is something I had never tried before. We got pretty drunk.

Then, there’s a poster near the bus station that reports the number of dengue fever cases in our neighborhood. It is a mosquito-borne tropical disease and the symptoms are high temperature, nausea, headache, rash etc. There’s no many mosquitoes here, but one bitten me and of course I assumed that I got dengue. The symptoms develop 3-14 days later, we will see!

We also went to Sentosa, a man-made beach. It looks nice but we’re not quite happy about it because of the huge boats blocking the view to the horizon and the oil slick in the sea.

Then, we tried this century egg which is a chicken egg preserved in a mixture of clay, ash, salt, quicklime and rice hulls for several weeks to several months. It looks awful, but the taste is not as bad. Not much different than a regular cooked egg, maybe a little lighter and softer.
