I'm a small minnow account on Steemit. I entered this contest after reviewing @namiks' post and the requirements for entry. I, like any other small account on Steemit, want to grow their account. By doing so, I'll be able to assist other Redfish starting out the way others helped me when I first started. So I entered this contest to review a movie. I have to tell you I don't often go out to the theaters any longer. My last movie going experience was to see The Revenant.

Leonardo DiCaprio is one of my favorite younger actors. I grew up watching actors/actresses from the 1940s - 1960 mostly black and white oscar-nominated movies. I came to like Leonardo's acting when he appeared in Blood Diamond and The Titanic.

By the time he starred in The Revenant as the lead actor, I was already a fan. The movie was made in 2015, but wasn't released in the U.S. until January, 2016.

The Revenant is actually a true account of the frontiersman, Hugh Glass. His adventures in the early 1800s, makes for a fascinating story of life and exploration of the wilderness. He is also supposedly of Indian descent. Fur trading and trapping is his life’s work.

The term “revenant” means to literally return from the dead. This is exactly what this explorer does as he survives a brutal animal attack that most humans would not have. The setting of the movie was the most important feature. I love the western genre. I especially love the old movies and series from the 1950s and 60s depicting life in the old west. This is the reason I was drawn to this movie.

I’m not familiar with the co-stars of this movie. But they all gave excellent performances. Below is the official Trailer for The Revenant.

DiCaprio’s portrayal of the frontiersman, Hugh Glass, is intense. However, the first five minutes into the movie, I realized I’d seen this before. Indeed I had. The events of this movie was portrayed in an earlier movie by Richard Harris. In any event, DiCaprio delivers an excellent portrayal also of the explorer.

The movie’s main plot revolves around a group of explorers who are supposedly best friends. Their friendship is put to the test when DiCaprio is injured in a brutal scene by a bear. One of his friends doesn't want to leave him behind. The others overrule him, and DiCaprio is left to die. The scene depicting the mauling is perhaps the most powerful and dramatic one of the entire movie.

DiCaprio is determined to survive in the freezing temperatures after the bear attack. He is left to fend for himself. He almost dies, but his teachings and his will to survive are strong. He utilizes his survival skills to stay alive. Incensed that his friends left him for dead, he’s determined to track them and exact his revenge.

The elements and danger he faces along the way is what makes the film dramatic to watch. Emmanuel Lubezki’s cinematography depicting the ruggedness and ruthlessness of the wilderness is what makes the movie visually compelling. The backdrop of the action takes your eyes off the characters so you can see the dangerous elements the explorers have to contend with. Then your mind begins to reel in anticipation of how they are going to maneuver their way around or through the impending danger.

DiCaprio delivers an academy award winning performance. And rightly so. He was nominated and won Best Actor. The movie itself won numerous awards.

Although I like DiCaprio for his acting ability, I love his personal endeavors also which include his organization dedicated to protecting the Earth. This includes protection for the climate, wildlife, and all poverty-stricken human beings.
