It was officially established as a national park in 2002 by merging the Shivapuri and Nagarjun forest reserves.

The park is characterized by dense forests, diverse wildlife, and a variety of ecosystems, ranging from subtropical to temperate climates. The altitude in the park ranges from 1,366 meters to 2,732 meters at Shivapuri Peak, the second-highest hill surrounding the Kathmandu Valley.

Additionally, the park is home to various species of butterflies, reptiles, and amphibians.

The most popular trail leads to Shivapuri Peak, from which visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Himalayas, including peaks like Langtang, Ganesh Himal, and Dorje Lakpa. Another notable hiking route is the one leading to the Nagi Gompa, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery, which offers a peaceful retreat and meditation center.

Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park holds cultural and religious importance as well. The park contains several sacred sites, including Baghdwar, the source of the holy Bagmati River, and the Vishnu temple at Budhanilkantha, a revered pilgrimage site for Hindus.
