Exploring Natural Dental Health | Pt. 3 - Baking Soda, Alkaline Guardian of the Mouth

in natural-health •  5 years ago  (edited)

In this series we have looked at the necessity for an alkaline milieu in our mouths, we have explored a detox morning routine and we even explored a golden, beneficial and virtually unknown alternative to sugar.

But what about the basics? What about the daily brushing of teeth with toothpaste, is there anything we can improve upon?

Universal Alkaline (Cleaning)-Tool

It's quite hard to believe at first until you actually try it but baking soda (sodium bycarbonate) is a really powerful thing to have in your household. Not only in your kitchen but also and especially when it comes to cleaning your body and your environment.

Brushing teeth with this stuff is outright exciting! It changes the milieu in your mouth towards slight alkaline and the sensation is somewhat of an adventure! I have listened to natural health enthusiasts who claim that all you really need to do is to brush your teeth with this stuff after your last meal or snack and the saliva in your alkaline mouth can do its job to take care of your teeth, remineralize them and repair them. Sure it helps to be thorough and have wine gums stick between your teeth but once your teeth are free from sticky attachments (hehe) all you really wanna do is to get alkaline, and leave the mouth right there. Let it soak.

I put a little bit of baking soda into my hand, throw it in my mouth, put a bit of water on it and start brushing. It tastes like a gentle salt but at the same time sweet, probably due to the reaction it causes in the mouth. It has the tendency to neutralize all acids that linger and in connection with a good brushing technique it will greatly help to keep your mouth in an optimal state for health.

You could also prepare a bit of mouth wash, simply put some baking soda in water and keep it handy for travels or right by your bed for a quick mouth rinse. Seems ideal in times where noone has enough time for elaborate routines. A few quick mouth washs every day should already have immense impact on your overall acidity in your mouth and therefore - the health of your teeth and gums.

Baking soda can easily be transported, is universally available in most parts of the world and best of all it can be used for so many other things: It can be the basis of your self-made deodorant. People wash their hair with it, take showers with it. Some people clean their house with it, their skin, their windows.

It is quite amazing to see how easy it can be to take our health back into our own hands.

So much for the theory and the alternative hearsay. However, I can already say that I have completely stopped experiencing toothache since starting with these simple techniques described in this series and that it jives amazingly with my intuition. I feel great and it costs nowhere near as much as "conventional" dental hygiene, especially considering the actual health benefits we are gaining.

I am curious, what about all of you out there? Have you ever tried baking soda for your dental health? Did you already create a wonderful Xylitol, baking soda and coconut oil toothpaste to great benefit? Or how does this all jive with your own experience?

I am currently experimenting with my favorite combinations to create the perfect flouride-free toothpaste I dig, then see how it works out ;) It feels like health was never meant to be a difficult thing to maintain - if only we focus on ways of helping the body do its thing and supporting it in that, instead of forcing drastic measures upon it that are hindering our natural innate healing processes...
