I wonder if you have found that today's weather is often strange and unusual, rainless areas are extremely dry, rainy areas are flooded, and even more hail, hurricanes, earthquakes are frequent. What's wrong with our planet? Is it time for us to be alert?
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) believes that behind the frequent occurrence of extreme weather events is a trend characteristic of climate, namely, the warming of the earth.
Scientific research has confirmed that the global warming caused by the increase of atmospheric greenhouse gas concentration caused by human activities can change the frequency, intensity, spatial range and duration of extreme weather events, and may cause unprecedented extreme events. The latest research results show that when the average state of climate changes, the frequency of extreme weather events will increase significantly. If the mean temperature shifts to the warm direction, the extreme cold weather will decrease, and the frequency of extreme warm events will increase significantly, and vice versa.
In addition, climate change will also change the large-scale circulation pattern, air-sea interaction, land-air interaction and so on, which will affect the occurrence of extreme weather and climate events in different regions. Take the "El Nino" phenomenon in the equatorial Pacific as an example. Global warming increases air-sea exchange, and the ocean absorbs increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which in turn leads to warming of the sea. Extreme events and disasters triggered by "El Nino" will increase accordingly, such as floods in southeastern South America and Western North America. And droughts in India and Australia.
At the same time, global warming has also contributed to the accelerated melting of Arctic sea ice. In the past 30 years, the minimum area of sea ice cover in summer has been reduced by half. The direct consequence is to change the northern hemisphere's Winter Atmospheric Circulation by affecting the Siberian high, which leads to a significant increase in the frequency of extreme cold events in the middle and high latitudes of Eurasia.
In recent years, extreme weather and climate events related to global warming have become increasingly frequent, which have brought many adverse effects on social economy, ecological environment and human health. According to statistics from authoritative agencies, from 1980 to 2013, 22,000 natural disasters occurred worldwide, causing about $3.8 trillion in economic losses. About 87% of natural disasters and more than 70% of economic losses are directly related to climate disasters or meteorological conditions, such as drought, floods, tropical cyclones, high temperature heat waves and low temperature cold damage.
Behind the extreme weather are pests and diseases, as well as the devastation of crops, hard-working peasants have been hard-working to give up. It is important to develop science and technology, but it is too expensive to destroy the environment on which we live. Now extreme weather happens frequently. Imagine how terrible it will be in the future. I hope we leave it to future generations not to hope that it will be destroyed.
