As kids we use to play around with palmistry seeing if we would get married and have kids, live a long life and such.
Back in the 1800s it was considered a science and as cited from the "Handbook of Modern Palmistry" published 1888
" Man's past history and future destiny are written
upon the palm of his hand." Is this proposition to be accepted with implicit faith ?
We assert that it may, and we add that its truth is established by the following considerations:
- By the history of the science called Palmistry (a name derived from the Latin palma, the hand).
- By physical and physiological discoveries of modern times, especially those relating to the influence of
the heavenly bodies upon terrestrial creation and still more those which reveal the wonderful effects produced by the action of electricity and magnetism. - Finally, the truth of the axiom with which we began is demonstrated by the constantly repeated observation and experience of thousands of incredulous persons.
Let us briefly examine each of these points before proceeding to furnish the reader with the means of making investigations and discoveries for himself, the accuracy and certainty of which will fill him with genuine astonishment.

They described those using palmistry to be like doctors diagnosing, knowing the symptoms that they would read the signs in the hands to see if they were there.

My TCM doctor looks at palms, as well as face, eyes, etc... it was part of TCM, but not something we're taught nowadays.

No, sorry I don't do this, just a simple curiosity but I picked up a public domain book that you can download free off Google Books called "Hand-book of Modern Palmistry"
By V. Metz (de) 1888 with some good info in it.

As for which hand to read you should look at both but it's your dominant hand that is given the most importance to.

Palmistry is fascinating, thanks for sharing this. When I was a kid a gypsy read my palm. I remember the predictions were good ones but not the specifics. Regardless of the validity of this particular palm reading, it has been nice to have good omens of the future to carry along with me.

Yes that's so true that they give you those good omens to carry with you. I remember looking at my two different palms and see what i would become was much stronger and that gave me an added confidence and belief in myself moving forward. In other cultures it is more valued.
My husband tell tales of being in India and sitting on the bus and the person beside him would ask "Where exactly are you from" (being he was a westerner) then he would grab his palm and begin reading it. Very different.
