Not too long ago, these birds were on the verge of extinction...

But thanks to the hard work an perseverance of conservationist they are becoming a more regular sighting in South African reserves.

There has been great success in the breeding programs in Limpopo and with a steady increase in numbers, these birds are being re introduced into their natural habitat.

It just goes to show that we really can make a difference on the planet that we live on!

Interesting to know they are on the road back to good numbers @breeezin have never seen one, if I ever get up that way will be sure to look out for the big bird.

Great!! Thank you so much for the comment

I was lucky enough to see them in Kruger.

They are a welcoming sight indeed

Fascinating birds, I've never actually seen them before so I have learned something new.
What happened to decimate their numbers in the first place?

They only breed once every 3 years and the sudden change in habitat due to human cultivation nearly wiped them out

I just hope that when the numbers are increased and they are once again released back into their natural habitat...humans don't wipe them out again. The human population is also increasing unfortunately.

Yes that is true, at the moment they are released in conservation areas
