Hi gang. Tonight's Daily Nature Fix is about a trio of Great Egrets that visited our backyard a few years ago. It was actually the first year we moved here I believe, so that'd put it around 2013. There were some resident ducks and Canadian geese living at the natural ponds on our property, but one day in May something bright white caught my attention against the dark green foliage.
Being that I'm not a "birder", I wasn't exactly sure what I was. It looked like a blue heron, which pop into the pond area every once in a while, but it was a pure, blazing white color. I thought it was some kind of swan or something. After a quick consultation with google on my iPhone, I identified it as a Great Egret.
It's a cool animal. It stood around 3 and a half feet tall. I watched it for a while for a little while as it walked along the shoreline with a keen eye on the water. Suddenly, it plunged it's face into the pond super quick. I was able to snap a photo of it at that very moment.
What I didn't get a clear photo of, is what it brought up. It caught either a small fish or a frog. It threw it's head straight up into the air and choked it down like a pelican. It wasn't long after this that my attention was taken away from this angler and I saw two more of these cool birds come flying into the scene. They landed in an old dead tree at the pond's edge. Adults of these guys can have a near 5 foot long wingspan! Definitely a cool sight, especially from the comfort of my own home.
^^^Boy, that one on the left is looking right at me, but it sure looks weird. lol Like it has no face!

Mr. No face just didn't like that you were taking photos ;)
Great job taking a photo of the bird with it searching for food. I'd jumble around trying to get my phone and miss the opportunity.
