Daily Nature Fix: Sea Stack at Downpatrick Head, Co. Mayo, Ireland. (Original Photos)

Good evening folks!  Tonight's Daily Nature Fix is about a massive stone pillar that stands just off of the costal tip of Northern Ireland.  It is a sea stack called Dún Briste located at Downpatrick Head, a peninsula in County Mayo.

^^^That small, concrete building is a watch out used during WWII.

Downpatrick Head has a lot of history to it.  St. Patrick himself founded a church at this location during his lifetime.  I mean THE Saint Patrick.  The area's name "Downpatrick" is derived from him.  Also, it was a somewhat important look out location during WWII and a lookout house and concrete lettering still remain at the location.

^^^Look at that water! 😍

The entire coast in this area a sheer 130 foot cliff.  The waters are a beautiful blue and the turf is made up of grass and massive clusters of cushion moss.  Beautiful by land and by sea.

^^^Dún Briste.

The main attraction to most is the towering sea stack which sits just a few hundred from the mainland cliffs.  It is Dún Briste (The Broken Fort).  Like the cliffs, the stack stands around 130 feet above the sea and clearly displays it's layers of rock strata.  Several centuries ago, a land bridge used to connect the stack to the land and people had settled the stone pillar.  Around the 1390's, however, during a particular strong storm, the land bridge collapse and stranded the settlers on the dizzying island.  Records indicate the families were rescued using several ships and ropes.

^^^Me getting as close to Dún Briste as I can!

That looks like a very defensive area so a watch house makes sense to be there.

Certainly, @mattt. A very strategic location, that's for sure. Though I'm not sure what they'd be looking for that far north. lol

That looks amazing!

I have never seen such a great view of friends.

Beuatiful view. It's still nature. I hope one day i will come here.

I am stunned by the natural beauty of this place. It looks like a dream setting - what a gift! Perfect imagery before bedtime.

I'm happy to provide that for you, @enternamehere! :)

Amazing! 😲 It would be a once in a lifetime thing to actually step foot on that sea stack. Is it off-limits for people? I wish I could go there. I'm surprised no one has tried to climb it.

woow this is amazing what you saw live, It would be a pleasure to watch this live. Can you do more photos like this. Thank you for allowing me to take it. Until today I knew it did not exist
