Daily Nature Fix: Way Up in the Azores. (Original Photos)

in nature •  7 years ago

Good evening, everyone. Tonight's Daily Nature Fix is going to be a couple of photos taken on the island of Sao Miguel, in the Portuguese archipelago known as the Azores. All throughout the island, there are tons of scenic overlooks, known locally as "miradoras", if I'm remembering correctly. These photos were taken at the highest points (literally) on that trip.

^^^This one was taken above the town of Sete Cidades. The Azores were created by undersea volcanoes, like Alaska. Basically, this place was like the Atlantic/Poor man's version of Hawaii, now that I think about it. Anyway, in this photo you can see a volcanic crater (actually several of them) which helped breathe life into the island.

^^^A wider panoramic shot of the same area.

^^^This is looking over the village of Furnas. The entire town is located at the bottom center of the Furnas volcano's caldera. What a comforting thought, huh? Off the right side of the photo, you can can see some steam rising from a geothermal area right in the center of town. Several hot springs and steam vents are in the area.

^^^The last one was taken at.... well.... Well, I don't remember where this was taken. I THINK it's over looking the town of Povoacao in the southern part of the island. Check out those crazy evergreens that look like Bob Ross painted them!

Nice post. You really had a great trip

Açores is really something! There are paleolitic remains and very old "man made" pyramid shape mouds all over the place. It's in my bucket list.

I need to look into this!

Natural Photography, i like it

Very awesome photos! What a beautiful place, those
craters are something else, so green so steep!
Do they use the geothermal for power?
Those cool Bob trees look like norfolk pine or monkey
puzzle trees. I remember his painting shows on pbs.

I hope they're monkey puzzle tree because that's the best tree name I ever heard. lol Ya know, I didn't notice any geothermal power plants while I was there, but I hope they are harnessing what they can from it. We did have a dinner that was cooked by being buried in the soils of one of these hot spots though. It was delicious!

First one is especially amazing. I got from this post is Island of san miguel should see.

Bob Ross definitely painted the southern part of the island...

That would certainly explain things...

I love the way you arranged your post. Thank you for all your work.
UpVoted!

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.

I love seeing all that green! The volcanic craters make for such an interesting landscape. Is that a road around the crater in the first photo? I wonder if a geologist (?) somewhere has put a clock on an impending explosion. What season was this?

Yup! That road winds down to the actually village. We went in October, the weather was perfect, like 73F. I would also like to know a geologists prediction because this island alone is made up out of 6 volcanos, I think. lol

Nice . Hope to sail there one day.

Ah man, a sea-side view of the islands would be fantastic I bet.

Wow! It's so beautiful and charming images of nature. All the images are really lovely and beautiful. This photography is truly stunning and unique. You have captured the nature very beautifully.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful photography.

That place looks incredible, I need to brush up on my Portuguese.

Foi obrigado. ;)

I saw those evergreens and thought of Bob Ross, then read your comment...haha

Excellent pictures, as always. That pano is out of this world!

Ha! Yeah, man. Even when I was there in person, I said the same thing. They seemed so cartoonish. I need to look up what species they are.

Very nice of you to share such beautiful photos from this nature.
