The Blue Tit is one of the brightest birds in the garden and also one of the loudest. You can often see the blue tit perched on the highest branch of the tallest tree singing away.
Blue tit are often confused with the larger great tit. You can tell the difference as the great tit is larger and has a solid black cap. If you want blue tits in your garden you need to provide cover for the bird to hide in and also food. They love peanuts and will also eat small seed and take fat from fat balls or half coconuts filled with fat.
If you put a nest box up for blue tits make sure the hole isn't too big as this will allow larger birds to enter or attact the blue tits. The hole should be around 1.125 inches or 28 mm in diameter.
If you have woodpeckers in the area you may need to put a metal plate over the front of the box with the entry hole in that. Woodpeckers will attack the blue tit box and take the eggs or chicks if they gain entry.
