Birds and the Musa paradísiaca

Plantain or banana; It is not a tree, "but a megaforbia, a large perennial herb" that can be grown in tropical countries. Scientifically known as Musa paradisíaca, this interesting plant is recognized for having one of the largest leaves in the plant kingdom, its fruit is very rich in calories, fiber, carbohydrates, vitamin A and C.

We cultivate and consume the two varieties: the plantain is prepared in different ways; fried, cooked, roasted, in cakes (when it is ripe) and in patacones (when it is green) and the banana we eat when it is ripe (which means yellow ;) directly, only remove the skin and eat. We use their leaves for our typical dishes known as tamal and chupao, I'll tell you about these later c;

But I know other living beings who enjoy them too, especially ripe which get eaten completely.

Our beautiful bird, the Red crowned Woodpecker Melanerpes rubricapillus , who we have observed from very early in the morning, he arrives very quietly and eats and eats with such speed, it must taste very delicious, he even makes me crave some plantain...

The Crimson backed Tanager Ramphocelus dimidiatus does not stay behind, he knows how to bullously alert the others, some friends that we have not been able to identify yet, because he enjoys the musa, flies off and leaves, and then returns later for more.

Also the mountaineering Turpial Icterus chrysater , enjoys the alimentary properties of the plantain and the banana until the finish, but it will not be a problem because in a single flight it finds others almost ripe that it knows how to begin.

Now we know that Musa paradísiaca is a delicious hybrid that both humans and birds can enjoy, the goal is to spread the species much more, because there are more birds every day that we want to observe and identify.

Are these photos from the cafetal? We are trying to grow more too. Love the birds coming around to have a feast. There is plenty for them and us too! It is funny what excites homesteaders. Yesterday we were thrilled to find a nest of baby squirrels in our Sabo tree. We have heard little raccoons too but haven't found them yet.

Ah! We love animal nests! Squirrels are the nemises of most farmers but we love to see them jumping around, we also have some other mammals, never seen a racoon this far south though....

We have been surprised on several occasions when we have spotted them. When you don't want them to get the garden you sprinkle hot pepper powder around them. Animals don't care for piquant!

Yes, we have planted the coffee plants with others such as, banana, plantain and fruit and timber trees. I think birds like it a lot. :)

Oh cool that is awesome! Love this post :) That woodpecker is gorgeous. I love woodpeckers. The pileated woodpecker we have here in Oregon is a beautiful showy bird as well.

Thank you very much for your support @carlgnash. ;)
I love birds, i love woodpecker too. It's a very interesting bird family. :)

Awww, how sweet! You're fortunate to see these little cutie pies every day! We don't get to see them in the city, unfortunately. The last one is very cute.

Thank you very much. It is a blessing from God this experience. It makes me happy to share these observations with you and the lovely Steemit family.😃

I love both of them! Bananas in my smoothie and plantain baked. So delicious and so healthy! Is this a woodpecker? Great photos!

Thank you very much. I also love the two bananas and plantain. Yes, the bird is a woodpecker, The red-crowned woodpecker (Melanerpes rubricapillus). ;)

Hi @curie,
Thank you very much for your support, it is very important for my blogger development the motivation that you give me. Again thank you very much. :)

You have a banana farm? I love to eat different type of bananas especially fried banana but i didn't know what the name specifically, I just call it banana :p In tropical country, it do grow a lot of bananas. You have a good photography skill. The color of the photo look nicely and you have took it in a right angle. You must have a lot of patience in oder to catch the Woodpecker.

Thank you very much. We have a farm in Colombia. Andean tropical area where we grow coffee, bananas, timber trees, fruit trees, ornamental trees and medicinal plants. There we observe the different interactions. :)

wow coffee.. The coffee is for your own consumption? My father used to have land with timber trees as well but next to it, he like to plant papaya, banana and cocoa. But not Coffee. Now already sold off due to no time to maintain.

Yes, we consume our coffee friendly with the planet and with our health. ;)

Hello those birds are so cute!!i love to add bananas in my cooking for main or dessert even juices:)

Hello, yes I agree with you; The bananas are delicious can be prepared in different ways and the birds are beautiful, here we love them ;)

Yes it must be so cute to see them eating the bananas on the trees:)

Yes, it is a wonderful experience to observe the birds around. :)

It does sound wonderful:) and that means the bananas are delicious if they are enjoying them:D

Yes, the plantains and the bananas are very delicious and sweet. Birds know about the delights that nature provides :)

Hehehe clever birds:)

You know, sometimes we've found empty nests among the banana bunches. 😀

What a splendid picture of the woodpecker having a feast on the banana, we have a whole lot of banana specie and even in my country, I have a plantation but I have only one specie ehcgt didn't resemble the one here.
I love the way you added video and pictures to really complement with the botanical names and the various banana types.
I never knew if it's possible to make banana hybrids till I saw this. Beautiful content here indeed

Thank you very much for your comments. I keep learning to better share my observations from rural life. Here we have 7 varieties of bananas and plantain :)

Hey @ecoinstante, thank you for such itneresting information about Musa paradísiaca. Of course I enjoy banana, although first time I tasted it when I was more then 20 years, I immediately fell in love with banana and till now it is my favorite. it is interesting that birds are enjoying it too. As to leaves, you are right they are really huge. Couple of years ago we planted two banana trees in our garden and when they have had leaves my son could stand under it and was completely covered with it :)
Cheers from Art supporting blog @art-venture

Hi @art-venture, your welcome. Thank you very much for your comments. The Musa Paradísiaca is a super interesting plant and its fruit is delicious. I love bananas and plantains. We see that birds like too. :)

I never knew that birds too enjoy plantains and bananas, oh well, it seems like its not just humans that know and enjoy these good stuff! Lol. I love Bananas and plantains as well, I prefer my plantains fried though, it tastes much better that way (or maybe I haven't tried much of the cooked variety).

I think I have come across some bananas that still look green even after they are ripe, maybe you haven't come across that variety yet?

I am really interested in knowing that dish you make with the leaves, I have never heard of it. How does it taste like?

Hi, yes the plantains and bananas are delicious. I love the plantains fried a lot, (tajadas fritas).
I observed that when they cut very green bananas they can look green outside and be ready inside. But I believe that the taste is not the same, that when the necessary time is left. Here on the farm the birds tell us why we listen to them as if they were partying.

Of course, yes, I'm going to tell you the traditional recipes with the plantain leaf. :)

Ohh! That must be the green ones I saw and thought they were different varieties. The taste was different but it wasn't bad at all... The birds definitely are useful, keeping little animals in the farm does help...

I look forward to you sharing that recipe, I hope its soon....

Birds help us with insect control, we also have fun with their company.

Very soon I will share the ancestral recipes ;)

Ohh! That's great! Watching them play around must be fun...

Its ancestral? I so look forward to that..

Yes, it is very fun and dynamic. I tell you a little bit, The use of banana leaves is an idea for several centuries. The natives of these mountains used them as their dishes they did not have dinnerware😀

As their dishes? That's really creative... Wow!! I wonder if the food tasted a bit different when served on the leaves... That sure is fun!

What a lovely variety of birds that came visiting @ecoinstante :) Do you do bird watching, sit and wait for the birdies to come or they are usually there each time you visit your farm? I think bananas are known as the happy fruit, which makes them a happy yummy treat for both human and birds :) ? Your banana trees look really tall. The banana trees I've seen are usually quite low. And do you have papaya too? I think I see papaya leaves nearby but I am not sure. Thank you for sharing your post and the wonderful video and photos :)

I didn't know that woodpeckers like bananas. Thanks so much widening my horizons!

Hello, your welcome is a great pleasure to share my observations with you ;)
