"My first ever Wildlife tour".
Calauit Safari is one of the few Wildlife Sanctuary in the Philippines it was initiated by President Ferdinand Marcos in 1976.
This is the route from Coron Town to Calauit Island its a bit far than what we expected but everything is worth it, just follow the route so that you won't lost.

First thing we did we rent a scooter for a day at Angel Motorcycle Rental. Before you head out to Calauit Island be sure to full tank your gas there's not a lot of roadside seller that sell a liter of gasoline.
Here's the motorcycle rental prices. You can visit also the Boyet motorcycle rental just a few meters distance.
We've seen a lot for posting on the trees for properties for sale. If your interested you can contact them for more information and the location but be wise.
Driving in Coron surrounded by mountains that makes it more beautiful. Some of the mountains are private but there are few that you can walked up for hiking and exercise. There's a lot of rice plants, some private beach and resorts.
The local transportation for local people leaving in Coron are jeepneys, motorbike and bus.
We saw this church from the road that catch our attention. We walked through at least a hundreds of steps to reach the church. It's just unique and build like European style with stones that looks beautiful. It's a beautiful spot and the view from the top is amazing with fresh air.
There's not a lot of coconuts here compared to other parts of Philippines. It seems like a dry climate, more different trees than coconuts. There's a lot of bamboo trees in some spot and cashew nuts. Some hills are completely burned, I don't know if it was forested or logging. There are some coconuts near in rice plants and rivers. Some mountains and landscape are hard to see because it covers by the trees.
Be careful on driving there's a lot of animals on the road like cows and goats. The roads are like snake with a lot of curve but no signs, it's not good to drive in the evening. You will see some resort and restaurants along the way but they are very distant. You can stop and relax a little bit at any of the roadside stands. They sell snacks and gasoline.
To make a road you need to dig the mountain to build a road. Kids in Coron are friendly whenever they see you they always wave to us and say hello.
We were just over half tank so we got 1 liter of gas from a roadside seller for 50 pesos so that we have enough to get back.
Arriving at the port going to Calauit Island is the end of this route and there are some people ask you and guide you to the port. The drive took more than 2 hours. The boat fare is 400 pesos going there and back. It took only 10 mins drive on the boat.
Arriving at Calauit Island here's the entrance and filming fees.
If you wanna use the jeep its extra 1000 otherwise its a kilometer and half walk.
Background of Calauit the project is started 1976 it was initiated by President Ferdinand Marcos. Under Presidential Proclamation 1578 Calauit was declared “Calauit a preserve Wildlife Sanctuary”. The size of the island 3760 hectares. In March 4, 1977 80 species of African animals arrived in Calauit. The Giraffes, Zebras and the Antelope like Waterbucks, Bushbucks, Elands, Gazelles, Impalas and Topis. So out of this 80 species only 5 survive we lost population of Gazelle, Topi and Impala. Right now all of the original stock came from Kenya Africa already died and what was now thriving here are all island born. Now it's third generation animals.
Zebra will give you double back kick so please cooperate with the guide. Each Zebras has different patterns and each group has 1 Zebra that controls them all. To identify the female it has a lighter color while male has a darker color.
During mating season Giraffes male are fighting and who ever wins the fight he will be the one get service all the females. However, before the mating occur they are two weeks courting, all the male do is just follow the in heat female wherever she goes and he even taste the urine :o . By doing that he knows if the female is ready for mating.
The Giraffes only eat leaves and the Zebras only eat grass, so as you can see in the compound all the grass are trim and the leaves pretty much gone everywhere below 20 feet. There only a certain design where we come closer because the Giraffes they can kick at any directions.
When you feed the Giraffes hold the wood tight, they are very strong. Don't give all, hold the woods and they will just eat the leaves.
Now they have 23 Giraffes and 35 Zebras.
Wild boar
At night time the hair is luminous it will turn to white with red eyes.
Land Turtle
The male has a curve bottom while the female has flat bottom.
This hole is from a poisonous spider.
Wild Cats
They eat coffee beans that makes their poo more useful and expensive to buy.
Water Crocodile
I forgot the name maybe Giant Rat? comment below if you know. :)
Python
Eats 1 chicken for 15 days. They like to eat alive chicken than dead chicken. They found a Python in the island eating a male Deer. The Python died because of the Deer horn.
Camouflage tree.
This Deer has a wound in her back we thought its a blood but its a medicine they put. Female Deer doesn't have a horn while male has a horn.
This tree has a seed that looks like a poo of a Goat and has a smelly flower, it is a nuts but its very hard to break the shell.
Calauit Safari is one of the few Wildlife Sanctuary in the Philippines. I wish to have more visitors to help them provide the needs of the animals. We spend like almost 2 hours in this tour its very hot so I suggest to bring some water with you.
Driving back to Coron town we saw some burning grass, were not sure if its intention or just an accident. There are some beaches that you can relax after the Wildlife tour like Ocam Ocam beach but we haven't visited it due to lack of time.

I think that's a muskrat? I've seen the giraffes fighting for mates on tv before it looks scary and vicious. They used their necks like a whip or something. That's a good thing it's not mating season because they all look like they're being nice to each other. Thanks for sharing Crishel. Very nice pictures and descriptions. Salamat and ingats po... ; )
