Today I bring you another marsupial to know a little about these strange animals that inhabit our vast and varied world. Come with me to know some of their main characteristics.
Its scientific name is Vombatus Ursinus unlike other tree species this marsupial is terrestrial and small size, sometimes they identify it with a bear, live in southeastern Australia and Tasmania, between marsupials there are some that have differences and others are very similar to each other, this is the case of Koala and Wombat, although the Wombat can not climb trees.
This is a unique and endemic species of which there are 3 different classes, the normal Wombat, the southern hairy nose Wombat Lasiorhinus latrifrons and the northern hairy nose Wombat Lasiorhinus krefftii.
Its size is variable depending on age, can range from 0.7 meters to 1.5 meters long, and 35 centimeters high and weigh up to a maximum of 35 kilograms, its head is prominent and large, with very short legs, is equipped with strong claws, is quite muscular and strong in general, and their teeth are very similar to those of a common rodent.
Its coat is a color that goes from sand brown, in other species can be from gray to black, the Wombat that we are trying is different from others for not having hair on the nose and rounded ears, their typical bags are not in the front but in the back because this is a marsupial excavator could hurt the young, also protects them from dust and dirt while digging.
In general they are social animals, but some have a solitary behavior, while others can support to live with up to 15 individuals, they live in extensive burrows, but of a single entrance, the cameras that they build digging with much precision can be lined of grass, and barks of different types of trees in combination with leaves.
Another characteristic of the Wombat's behavior is that they are active during the night, digging and foraging for food when the night is over they tend to rest in the burrows very close to their entrances, although they do not climb trees they are excellent swimmers.
When they feel under threat, they can flee their predators at a speed of 40 kilometers per hour for an astonishing 90 seconds, not bad for our furry friend.
Their tunnels can reach more than 200 meters in length and this represents a big headache for the zoos where they live in captivity.
They are herbivorous animals, they eat large quantities of roots, bushes, herbs, barks, grasses and everything that is vegetation, in reality, have no limits. Wombats can spend years without drinking water from nearby rivers or springs, as they get most of their water from the
Another of the curiosities of this marsupial is that its feces are square this is because it spends a lot of time digesting food, up to 14 days.
This species is not under threat of extinction thanks to its few predators, sexual maturity reaches 2 years of age, and have 1 to 2 offspring in a gestation period that lasts up to 28 days, marsupials have the characteristic of being born underdeveloped, achieve development thanks to the bag they have to give milk and other nutrients as well as protect them from climate and predators.
