Hi Steemit family!

The Tasmanian Tiger or Tilacino

Today I will be talking a little about a marsupial that unfortunately became extinct as a result of man until the 1930s the last living specimen was known, I am talking about the famous Tasmanian tiger, known as one of the most ferocious carnivorous marsupials that have ever existed. Come with me to learn more about this incredible creature.

source

Its scientific name is Thylacinus cynocephalus, commonly called Tasmanian Tiger or Tilacino on other occasions it is called the Tasmanian wolf. Due to its aggressive behavior within the animal food chain, it was considered as a tiger species, although far from being similar because it is a carnivorous marsupial species, is rather related to the Devil of Tasmania another great carnivorous marsupial with a bad character.

source

In Australia it is known by scientific studies that this species lived for thousands of years but disappeared before the arrival of the settlers and survived in Tasmania, was practically endemic to this area, the colonists of English origin are responsible for the disappearance of the Tasmanian Tiger product of poaching as a sport, also diseases brought by settlers as well as animals such as dogs minimized the population of this great species that had lived in tranquility for many years.

source

Due to the time in which it lived little is really known about this species, as I mentioned it inhabited mainly Tasmania, many of the behaviors are the result of studies made to texts where it is expressed as it was the behavior of some specimens in captivity, as well as stories of colonists who estimated their behavior recorded in books of anecdotes, one of the most outstanding things that were a species with nocturnal habits.

source

Therefore his behavior must have been very similar to that of his closest relative the Tasmanian devil, with nocturnal habits and living in open areas where he could move daily at a rate of about 80 kilometers in diameter, a figure less than the one crossed by the Tasmanian devil, his resting place was made up of fallen trunks of certain trees he used as a den, according to anecdotes of the settlers says that the animal was a little shy so he avoided contact with humans.

source

Among its main features is that it was very similar to the structure of a large average dog, and with attitudes similar to the wolf, perhaps for that reason many called Tasmanian wolf, its maximum weight was estimated at 40 kilograms and with a maximum height of 50 centimeters and 2 meters long. There was a clear dimorphism between males and females with males being larger in size compared to females. Both possessed a set of stripes that summed a maximum of 20 stripes for which I gain more the name of the tiger by the similarity of the coat.

source

His habit of walking in a herd to carry out hunting and recreation activities, something similar to the techniques of the hyenas, his trot according to the chronic was a little clumsy in comparison with other felines that are faster and more elegant when running. He had a great hearing with ears very rounded with only 8 centimeters was able to hear sounds at a distance, another aspect was little force so he did not feed on prey that exceeded its size.

source

Mainly fed on birds, kangaroos and some species of rats with nocturnal behaviors that favored their hunting, at the arrival of the settlers began to represent a threat because this hunted horse, dogs, lambs and other animals of corral that raised the farmer's settlers of Tasmania.
