Hoarfrost around the farm

Early winter regularly gives us a few days of Hoarfrost buildup

Last week the weather was cold and the moisture was right for the Hoarfrost to buildup around the region. The farm had some amazing pockets of thick accumulation and some crazy cool ice construction.

The clouds made for some peekaboo lighting so only a few shots were able to have sunlight. One of the downsides of Fall/Winter in the northern tier is the regular lack of blue skies and bright sun.

Incredibly there was even Hoarfrost on the ice in the creek. I never thought about the concept of Hoarfrost growing on established ice before, so to see it was a bit surprising.

Along the creek, near the tunnel, the Hoarfrost had grown under the Maple leaves and inside of some logs and debris. The angle was hard to get a good view of the expanse of frost so I opted for a closer view. It was distinctly shaped ice and it covered an area of about 100 sq ft in a somewhat discontinuous pattern.

Winter is fully here now and the snow is on its way today. Not expecting a ton, but I hope it dumps on 49N Ski Area so I will have some nice depth for skiing on Sunday. I also plan to run the drone around in the snow today for some hopefully cool aerial snowfall video.
