World Water Day was proposed at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from June 3 to 14, 1992.
March 22 is an opportunity to learn more about water-related issues, inspires us to share water-related problems and take action to change the situation. The Day dates back to the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in which it was proposed to declare a date dedicated to this issue. The General Assembly decided to designate March 22, 1993 as the first World Day. Each year, UN-Water, the entity that coordinates the work of the Organization on water and sanitation, establishes a theme for the Day corresponding to a current or future challenge.
Humanity needs water
A drop of water is flexible. A drop of water is powerful. A drop of water is more necessary than ever.
Water is an essential element of sustainable development. Water resources, and the range of services they provide, play a key role in reducing poverty, economic growth and environmental sustainability. Water promotes the welfare of the population and inclusive growth, and has a positive impact on the lives of billions of people, by influencing issues that affect food and energy security, human health and the environment.
Currently more than 663 million people live without drinking water near their home, which forces them to spend hours queuing or moving to distant sources, as well as to cope with health problems due to the consumption of contaminated water .
1800 million people use a source of water contaminated by fecal material, which puts them at risk of cholera, dysentery, typhus or polio. Non-potable water and poor sanitation infrastructure, as well as lack of hygiene, cause around 842,000 deaths per year.
COMMITMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENT:
In recent years we have seen how citizen pressure, linked to a greater environmental commitment, has motivated the local institutions of local governments and local governments to put the accent on preserving water and not waste it. The planet is already sending warnings in the form of desertification. In some years, some places or environments had been rich and fertile, and now, due to the deterioration of the climatic conditions, suffer the consequences. Water as a natural resource deserves to be defended, and this important issue should be on the agenda of all politicians.
That is why it is so important to take care of our environment to preserve the quality of the water and to avoid that things that harm the quality of the water can happen. In addition, we must not forget that the more unbalanced the water is as a result of industrial activity, the more chemical products will be needed in the treatment of it. Water is a strategic resource of the first order that we must take care of as if it were a real treasure.
So let's do our bit we do not waste the water and take care of OUR ONLY PLANET
