The largest beetle in Europe is Lucanus cervus.(Rare view)

Today, near my house, I noticed a large beetle. It turned out to be Lucanus cervus - the biggest beetle inhabiting the territory of Europe. It's a male because he has big horns. It's a male because he has big horns. Its length is about 70-74 mm. In many countries of Europe they are considered a rare species and protected by states. The larvae of these beetles develop in the wood of dead deciduous trees, mainly in oak wood, for 4-6 years. See my photos.

Of course, we try to protect them. But they love old oak forests. And they have recently been cut down, sadly.

It helps if the fauna are cute and adorable (great clickbait) - but surely a giant beetle and old growth oak forests would appeal to preservationists enough to get the local community to rally together to protect those forests?

Of course you need to think about future generations. What we leave after ourselves. Communities certainly have a casting vote.
