Hi, I'm Chlorophyllum molybdites - do no eat me

These are known as the 'Vomiter or Green-spored Parasol'. These mushrooms grow on lawns and in the โ€‹grass all over North America and also is the leading cause of wild mushroom poisoning here. These mushrooms are poisonous, but in most incidents it is non-fatal. You will, however, spend a lot of time vomiting (hence the name 'the Vomiter'). There are lots of edible mushrooms and this one is commonly mistaken for one, so there's no wonder it's the leading cause of wild mushroom poisoning.

I found these growing at my parent's house during my last visit. They have a dog and I wasn't sure if these mushrooms were safe for the pup. After a search and using online I.D. tools, I found that it is not safe for pets, so I removed them. I take my kids over there to play and did not want them eating them by mistake either.

Had I not looked them up, I might have just left them in the grass because they are pretty cool looking! I'm glad I looked them up now. I would have felt terrible if I had left them and my parent's dog or my children gotten them. It is, from what I've read, a terribly unpleasant experience.

Not People OR Pet-Friendly

These mushrooms, if eaten by pets, can make your pet very sick and in some cases can be fatal. I think it is important that more people are able to identify these, so they can remove them before accidentally eaten by a pet or child. It is best to remove these whenever you see them. They're often mistaken for these edible mushrooms called 'Chlorophyllum rhacodes' (source of image to the rightโžœ)
These are edible and look strikingly similar.

Anything on the ground is open game for kids & pets

Smaller children can easily ingest these because they are attractive; they're large size and color make them easy to spot in the green grass. Dogs might also take interest in these and might find them tasty (at first), then it will become very ill. There are many mushroom identification tools online, but I used AmericanMushrooms.com, which has a much more information on these.

If there's any uncertainty - best to avoid eating it.

Especially when you read the symptoms, you'll want to avoid this one!

Were the green spores pretty obvious on the ones you found at your parents' house? I was fortunate to have the tasty species come up in my yard last fall, Chlorophyllum brunneum. I made Shaggy Parasol Soup, Shaggy Parasol Stroganoff, dehydrated them, and used them like beef strips to top a wild weed salad.

It's frustrating when the mushrooms that come up are not edible ones, lol. I have so many Agaricus xanthoderma, the Yellow Stainer, that come up every fall. I key them out every time, hoping they will be a different species. Finally, last year, I had some Agaricus campestris come up, too! But it's important to know the difference. The first one is part of the "Lose Your Lunch Bunch", while the second one is delicious. I hope your next mushrooms are tasty ones! :D

Thanks for sharing, @haphazard-hstead. I did not 'print' them to see for certain, though I did ask my parent's neighbor, who seemed certain that we shouldn't eat it. I removed them out of precaution because my kids were with me and the dog was beginning to show interest as I snapped photos of it.

I have some odd mushrooms that come up in my yard as well, so I might have to ping you for preparing the edibles that I find. I'm not much for eating them, but I'll try anything once ๐Ÿ˜†

The dehydrating idea you shared sounds like something I might have to try! Anything that resembles a beef strip - I'll try it..lol

Thanks again for your informative response! I'm learning a lot & that's what I like!!
