Following a great post that I saw on here last week, I am spurred on to write about one of our native snakes here in Southeast Asia. @papa-pepper found a Rough Green Snake in the wild and posted great post with a video on here. https://steemit.com/wild-man/@papa-pepper/the-wild-man-s-wild-friends-video-series-episode-51-rough-green-snake He was very comfortable handling it. I would not recommend the same with our beautiful version if you come across one.
Here in Southeast Asia we have many species of snake. Some are deadly venous of course, some are constrictors and some are completely harmless. However the fear of snakes that is prevalent in many people cause them to be killed by people who fear them and cannot tell the difference.
One of my favourites here is the Green Vine Snake, whose colour is so strikingly beautiful. It is midly venomous but not aggressive and moves very slowly. They rely on camouflage as a vine in foliage for their defence. If disturbed it will expand its body to reveal black and white markings on its scales. In addition they often open their mouth in a threat display and sometimes point their head in the direction what they are perceiving as a threat.
The Latin name is Ahaetulla nasuta which can translate as “eye plucker”. This is due to the fact that if picked up it can stare at the person’s eyes and can strike. The venom has been known to blind. Hence they are best just left alone.
I have been developing the InSeAsia website for three years. It genuinely is a labour of love. I have lived in Southeast Asia for 9 years and have no plans to ever leave.
Please follow me, up vote, comment and re-steem, and come and check me out. If ever you come to Saigon, Vietnam get in touch and we can meet up.
