The North American Wood Frog must be one of the 8th, 9th, or how ever many wonders of the world there are ! When Winter comes, and he first touches any ice, it sets off signals inside of his body to pull water away from the rest of his body and center it in a puddle around all his vital organs. Then.....that water turns to solid ice and freezes ALL his vital organs.
There is no breathing. His kidneys cease to function, and get this......his heart stops beating. There is literally no pulse ! Somehow he is able to flood himself with a type of glucose that works like an anti-freeze and keeps him still alive through the Winter, although he is as close to death as you can get.
Then when the Spring begins to appear, something miraculous happens.....He begins to thaw out. His pulse returns, and within about 10 hours he is back on his "frog legs" again jumping around as if Winter didn't even exist.
That is so cool to learn, and pass on to the grandkids.
Thanks!!!
